Jim Carroll

Like most people new to aviation, I entered the world of flight with very little knowledge — and was immediately swept up into the excitement of it. Today, I'm a flight instructor with the privilege of helping others launch into their own journeys.

Aviation came to me through a busy career. I'm one of the founders of Carroll-Net, one of the longest-running data-protection companies in New Jersey — for more than 30 years we've served the business community and helped defense contractors across the region achieve and document their compliance. It was the relentless pace of the workweek that first pointed me toward flying: looking for a faster way to get away with my wife, I booked a discovery flight. It changed my life.

A few minutes after takeoff, the instructor handed me the controls. With the smallest movement of my wrist the horizon banked; a gentle pull on the yoke and there was nothing but blue sky. This was unlike any vehicle I had ever been in. Every pilot remembers their first flight — it leaves a mark on us all.

What began as an escape became a lifelong pursuit. I joined the Paramus Flying Club in 2001, where I am still a member. From 2002 to 2018 I trained under aviation legend Master Instructor Emeritus Colonel Stephen Riethof, and in 2022–2023 with Doug Stewart of DSFI, a six-time Master Instructor and the 2004 National Flight Instructor of the Year. I've also had the privilege of instructing alongside aviation trailblazer Linda Scully. I bring everything they taught me into every lesson I give.

I'm also the founder of Accelerated Pilot, a CFI-designed program that helps aspiring pilots build real skills and confidence before they ever step into a cockpit.
